Choosing A Laptop: Windows Laptop Or Macintosh Powerbook - Computers

At present the Windows Laptop and the MacIntosh Powerbook are the most preferred plaptops for people around the world. A Windows laptop has the Windows operating system installed on it while the MacIntosh Powerbook manufactured by Apple Inc. uses its own operating system. The Windows operating system is the most widely used operating system in the world. The Linux operating system, which is a open source operating system, is widely gaining popularity as it can be freely distributed. In addition, the Linux operating system is not the hacker's paradise Windows is.

Let us compare the Windows Laptop and the MacIntosh Powerbook so that you can decide which one you would prefer.

The Windows Laptop comes in a variety of choices ranging from high-end, mid-range and ultralight laptops. A high-end laptop is preferred by those people who would like to replace their desktop machines. These machines usually have a large screen, fast processor and the maximum storage capacity. However laptops in this category weigh about 7 to 8 pounds and also include internal media devices such as CD-ROM and diskette drives. There may be a few USB ports so that you can attach external devices such as printers and digital cameras as well. A mid-range model is suitable for those consumers who would not like to shell out a fortune for their laptop. A mid-range model weighs a few pounds less than a high-range model and has a smaller screen. A mid-range model may be a little slower than a high-range model in terms of processor speeds and the options of internal media are more limited than in the high-range model. Ultralight models have the smallest display of all three and al so the processor speeds are the slowest. The expansion capabilities and internal media are limited and the media devices are usually on the external side. The main advantages of ultralight models is they are easier to carry around because of their light weight and battery life is longer.

The MacIntosh or Mac are a line of laptops manufactured by Apple Inc. MacIntosh systems are usually targeted towards the home, education and the highly professional services market. The MacIntosh Powerbook is the first MacIntosh laptop powered by the Intel Core Duo processor. It has a 17 inch wide screen, but also is available in a 15 inch wide screen. The MacIntosh Powerbook is available in three configurations, the 15.4-inch model at 2.0 GHz (US$1999) and 2.16 GHz ($2499) and a 17-inch model at 2.16 GHz $2799). All three models come with the Intel Core Duo Processor and an 80GB or a 100GB or a 120 GB hard drive. USB ports a FireWire 400 port, a ExpressCard/34 expansion slot, DVI and VGA connectivity (VGA via included adaptor), optical S-P/DIF and analog sound output and inputs, gigabit Ethernet are also added in all the three configurations.

The machines run on the Mac OS 10.4 operating system which is the system developed by Apple Inc. The Powerbook also has a magnetic power connector known as Magsafe and it can detach easily when yanked to prevent the laptop from being pulled off the surface. The keyboard is backlit so that the keys are easily visible and there is also a scrolling trackpad that comes standard across the line. Extra accessories include an external USB modem as there is no internal modem available now and a TV output adaptor.We have mentioned the basic features of the Windows Laptop and MacIntosh Powerbook. Both types of laptops are good in their own way. Weigh your needs and choose wisely.

Top 18 Free Software Downloads - Computers - Software

If like me, you have thought of an excellent board or card game and played it with family and friends, you will want to produce something more aesthetically pleasing than cut out cards from a scrap book. You do have the option of having a designer do all the work for you, however generally the cost is prohibitive when you start out.

In many communities there are free or very inexpensive computer classes for beginners. The instructors will be able to advise you of the best computer to suit your needs. The price of new PC's (personal computers) has reduced dramatically and even the cheapest laptop purchased would be fast enough to handle Board Game Design.

Having the correct software is essential in the design, quality and finish of your game. Imagine if you could achieve all required tasks using FREE Software.

Windows users would normally use Adobe Photo-shop to design the artwork needed to improve the appearance of the game. They would then use Microsoft Word to add this artwork to the Instructions, Cards and Outer Box. And then use Adobe Writer to convert the Word Document into a PDF Document required by the printers to manufacture the playing cards. These are the most basic programs needed and they all cost money.I prefer to use free software and I would like to share with you how I do this. The following are equivalent quality programs available for free download that will replace all of the above programs and more. The following guide is included to help those that choose to use Free Software. If you enjoy spending money, feel free to skip this article.

1. Install Ubuntu to Replace Microsoft: For an operating system use "Linux-Ubuntu" on your PC. I am not a Microsoft person. I run my entire business, have created my own board games and use Ubuntu to create and maintain my own website completely without Microsoft. I am writing this article using OpenOffice.org in Ubuntu and I will upload it to my blog in Firefox.Try Before You Buy. No Try Before you Download for Free.If you decide to install Ubuntu, you can keep Windows on your PC also. First BACKUP EVERYTHING!! Copy your personal files you cannot afford to lose onto a portable hard drive, DVD or CD. You don't need to backup programs that you have the original disc to reinstall. Just your photos, music and stuff.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for the outcome of you following this article. This is only a guide. If everything important is backed up then you shouldn't have anything to lose. Type Ubuntu Beginner into your browser's search engine and read through some tutorials very thoroughly first to familiarise yourself with the process before you begin.

(Tip: Microsoft needs to be installed on the PC first. If you put Linux Ubuntu on first and then try to add Microsoft; Microsoft will not recognise Linux and will probably format over the top of it.)

To get your free copy of Ubuntu, type Ubuntu Download into your browser's search engine to go to ubuntu.com. Download or FTP it to your hard drive. It will take long time to download, so let it download overnight and install it in the morning. Usually the downloaded file will be an ISO Image. Use Nero or something similar to burn the image to disc. The CD you have created will start automatically when your computer is restarted, unless you place the ISO image inside a folder on the CD.

When you have created the Ubuntu disc, put it back into the CD drive and restart the PC. The setup will begin and will ask if you want to install Ubuntu beside Windows on a separate partition or install it instead of Windows. Put it beside Windows for now until you find you no longer need Windows.

You will need to give Ubuntu at least 5 gig of hard drive, but more would be better if you have it. You will need a fast PC suitable to run XP. Ie 1 GB CPU with 512MB Ram.Unless you have previously installed Windows yourself, I suggest you read the Ubuntu site thoroughly first. Ubuntu setup is much the same as Windows setup and asks the usual questions.

What country is your location?What is the current Timezone?Do you use a US Keyboard?Create a Username and Password etc.

After install has finished, your PC will restart. You will be prompted to choose which operating system to start. Use the up down arrows to select Ubuntu.If you try to play mp3's, WMA, WMV etc. You will be prompted to download and install restricted extras. The legalities depend on your country.

2. OpenOffice.org is included in the Ubuntu operating system and will automatically replace Adobe Writer, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. You can open documents you have created in Microsoft Office and you can save documents, OpenOffice.org has created, as Microsoft Word Documents. You can export a document as a PDF document.(I prefer not to use Microsoft, but I will mention you can download and install OpenOffice.org on your Windows operating system)

3. KolourPaint will replace Microsoft Paint to save and edit images. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for KolourPaint and install.

4. GIMP will replace Adobe Photo-shop. GIMP (Graphics Image Manipulation Program) is capable of completing every task achieved by Photo-shop. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for GIMP and install.(I prefer not to use Microsoft, but I will mention you can download and install GIMP on your Windows operating system. To get your free copy of GIMP, type GIMP Download into your browser's search engine).

5. Firefox Web Browser is automatically included in Ubuntu and will be used to replace Internet Explorer. You may use Ubuntu Software Centre to search for and install other browsers such as Google Chrome if you prefer.

6. Evolution Mail is automatically included in Ubuntu and will be used to send and receive email as a replacement to Outlook Express. You may use Ubuntu Software Centre to search for and install Mozilla Thunderbird or another email program if you prefer.

7. KompoZer is a program used to create a website as a HTML or CSS Editor. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for KompoZer and install.

8. GnomeBaker is a program used to burn CD's & DVD's. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for GnomeBaker and install.

9. Rhythmbox is automatically included in Ubuntu and will be used to play music on your PC or add music to an iPod or MP3 player.

10. AcidRip to rip DVD's and Asunder to rip audio CD's. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for AcidRip or Asunder and install.

11. Wine (Windows for Linux) to run some Windows programs. Not all software written for Microsoft will run using Wine, but some will, i.e. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Paint, Microsoft Notepad. There is no need to use Wine because Linux Ubuntu has programs to do all Windows tasks, I have just included Wine for you to play around with. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for Wine and install.

12. KlamAV for virus protection. (Ubuntu is not vulnerable to virus's and therefore does not need virus protection. However if you Internet Bank you still need virus protection to satisfy the banks requirements). To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for KlamAV and install.

13. KTorrent for torrent downloads. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for KTorrent and install.

14. XSane to operate your scanner. XSane is automatically included in Ubuntu.

15. KGet is an excellent download manager. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for KGet and install.

16. Totem Movie Player is automatically included with Ubuntu and will play the same music and videos as Windows Media Player. VLC will play the videos that Totem cannot. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for VLC and install.

17. FileZilla to send files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). This is needed to send the artwork to the manufacturer/printer. To add some programs that were not included with the Ubuntu install. Click on Applications and then Ubuntu Software Centre and Search for FileZilla and install.

18. Games are included in Ubuntu such as Mahjongg, Solitaire, Spider, Mines, Sudoku, Freecell and Klondike and if you like games there are many - many more that can be downloaded for free.

Now the fun part - Learn Linux!It will seem unfamiliar at first, but if you give Linux a chance you may get to like using free software. Like many others you may even leave the windows sheeple for good. This will be a day of celebration indeed.Ubuntu seems to run faster and more securely and you will notice the difference. Western Digital My Book

Classic Editions

Essential Edition

In addition to the book-like design, the My Book Essential Edition drives have an Intelligent Power Management feature that stops the drive platters after ten minutes of inactivity, rather than the usual expedient of slowing them down. The unit also turns on and off with the computer it is attached to.

Essential Edition My Book drives are almost entirely black, with the exception of a single blue light, used to indicate power and activity, that is located on the front of the drive.

Premium Edition

Premium Edition drives are similar to the Essential Edition model but also include Firewire 400 ports, an integrated visual capacity gauge and Western Digital backup software.

Premium Edition My Book drives have the same black case as Essential Edition drives, however, the light surrounding the power button is blue. Also, inside the standard blue light is another blue ring light that contains 8 individual segments which indicate the remaining space on the drive.

Premium ES Edition

My Book Premium ES Edition drives are nearly identical to their Premium Edition counterparts, the only difference being that the ES line features a single eSATA connection instead of the dual Firewire 400 ports present on the Premium Edition, allowing computers with available eSATA ports to transfer data at speeds of up to 3 Gbit/s.

Pro Edition

The Pro Edition My Books contain all of the features of the Premium Edition ones, but with added Firewire 800 connectivity for fast data transfer. In addition, the Pro Edition My Books replace the Western Digital backup software found on the Premium Editions with EMC Retrospect Express backup and recovery software.

Pro Edition My Book drives have the same basic case design as Premium Edition drives; however, the case is silver rather than black. In addition, it includes a circular blue capacity gauge LED divided into six segments (representing 17% of usage per segment) and an outer ring that represents drive activity.

The "Pro Edition MyBook" is marketed as a RAID solution that can be used a backup device.

Studio Edition

The 'MyBook Studio Edition' comes with quad interface: USB 2.0 / Firewire 400 / Firewire 800 and eSATA. It is marketed for use with Macintosh.

The 'MyBook Studio Edition II' contains two drives and is designed to be used as a RAID system for increased performance.

The two drives can be replaced by the user, but the documentation states that "Only WD Caviar GP hard drive assemblies can be inserted into the My Book Studio Edition II or Mirror Edition enclosure."

The LED gauge has a design issue on these disks. Several[weaselwords] users reported that some of the LEDs were burning out after 3 to 4 months of normal usage.

World Edition

The World Edition My Books function as Network-attached storage (NAS), by way of an Ethernet interface. They also feature an extra USB host port to allow an additional USB drive to be daisychained. They are accessed as CIFS/SMB shared folders, via NFS or FTP and also feature UPnP, iTunes server functionality and a Twonky media server.

In addition, the World Edition uses WD Anywhere Access to gain remote access to the drive via the internet - although this limits the file types that can be accessed.

It has the same basic case design as the Premium Edition drives, including the capacity gauge, except the color of the World Edition is white. It also has the same Morse code ventilation as the other editions.

Network speed

Although MyBook Ethernet-capable disks come with a Gigabit Ethernet interface, the network speed is significantly slower, especially in older models, where it varies between 36MByte/s, with an average of 4.5MByte/s because of the limited 200MHz clock frequency speed of the ARM processor within. The CPU capacity to handle data is low, as WD Support seems to have answered a customer.. Newer Models compare to USB drive speed at between 10 and 25 MByte/s.

Internals

Controller board for My Book World Edition

This drive runs BusyBox on Linux on an Oxford Semiconductor 0XE800 ARM chip which has the ARM926EJ-S core. In addition it uses a VIA Cicada Simpliphy vt6122 Gigabit Ethernet chipset, and a Hynix 32 Mbit DDR Synchronous DRAM chip. The webserver is the mini_httpd server, although thought to be Lighttpd. The drives of the World Edition are xfs formatted, which means that the drive can be mounted as a standard drive from within Linux if removed from the casing and installed in a normal PC.

The disk filesystems are also known to exist in a format created by linux multiple devices driver (Mdadm) which ultimately wraps an ext3 partition with some metadata that allows the inquiry of the position of the drive in a RAID set. Unfortunately, this makes mounting the drives outside of the enclosure a bit more complicated, it also requires a machine with a flavor of the Linux operating system. For example, the best way to mount the drives on a Linux flavored operating system after they have been removed from the enclosure is to use the following set of commands for mirrored RAID 1 disks.

$ sudo modprobe md

$ sudo mknod /dev/md4 b 9 4

$ sudo apt-get install mdadm

$ sudo mdadm --assemble /dev/md4 /dev/sdb4

$ sudo mkdir /media/xyz

$ sudo mount /dev/md4 /media/xyz

$ sudo chmod -R 777 /media/xyz

Note that the above set of commands assume that your drives appear as /dev/sdb to linux. You can use a utility like gparted to determine which paths are relevant for your setup.

And alternately you can use this command set for mounting a multidisk spanning RAID 0 set in linux:

$ sudo modprobe md

$ sudo mknod /dev/md4 b 9 4

$ sudo apt-get install mdadm

$ mdadm -Cv /dev/md4 -l0 -n2 -c64 /dev/sdb4 /dev/sdc4

$ sudo mkdir /media/xyz

$ sudo mount /dev/md4 /media/xyz

$ sudo chmod -R 777 /media/xyz

Note that the above set of commands assume that your drives appear as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb to linux. Again, you can use a utility like gparted to determine which paths are relevant for your setup.

Further details and support are available at the following My Worldbook wiki.

Extending capabilities

The device can be 'unlocked' and accessed via SSH terminal (newer versions of WDH1NC10000 do not need to be "unlocked": MBWE SSH Access), meaning that the WD MioNet java-based software can be disabled so the device can be run with an unrestricted Linux OS, at the cost of voiding the warranty. The unlocking makes it possible to install other software on MyBook (i.e. run a different webserver or an ftp server (such as vsftpd) on it, use NFS for mounting shared directories natively from Unix, or even install a bitTorrent client such as rTorrent, etc.) Further information on unlocking the device and downloads you are going to need can be found here.

Edition II My Books

In addition to the regular My Book drives, Western Digital has also released special high-capacity "Edition II" versions of the Premium, Pro, and World Edition My Books. In addition to the features present in the respective My Book edition, these drives feature two 500 GB RAID configured hard disks which can be selected by the end user as RAID 0 (Data striping), or RAID 1 (Data mirroring), depending on personal preference. If selected as RAID 0, the end user has 1Tb of available storage. Either way, if one of the internal drives of the Edition II My Books fails, it can be easily removed and replaced by the user without voiding the warranty. Western Digital uses this feature to their advantage, claiming that their drives needn't be returned for costly service in the case of a drive failure.

New Editions

In Late 2007, Western Digital introduced a new line of My Book drives. These included the Essential Edition 2.0, Home Edition, Office Edition, and Studio Editions, and ranged in capacity from 320GB to 2TB. As some dealers offer the new edition My Book encased HD for a lower price than that of the plain HD it contains, customers have been known to purchase My Book drives, dismantle them, and use them in an internal bay in a PC or media device. The Home Edition features an Oxford 934 chipset.

WD MyBook World Edition shipping at the beginning of 2010 ("white light", e.g. Model WD10000H1NC with 1TB) come with single 3.5" hard disk from the Western Digital Green Power Series (claiming 30% more energy efficiency for the box), ox810 chipset (ARM926EJ-S cpu) and 128 MBytes of RAM. SSH root access can be enabled through the regular Web configuration UI. The hard disk contains a 2 GB System partition of which only 100 MBytes are used by the OS, and a separate 256MB swap partition. Data transfer speed (WinXP client with CIFS) is roughly 10 MByte/s writing and 16 MByte/s reading on a Gigabit Ethernet link.

Morse code

Morse code on a My Book Pro Edition drive case

The Morse code message written into the drive case is made up of a selection of the words "personal", "reliable", "innovative", "simple", and "design". The first occurrence of "innovative" on the My Book Pro and My Book World Edition features a misspelling and reads "innovateve".
