The Different Linux Distribution Systems - Technology
Linux has several kinds of OS or operating systems, named Linux distributions. There are now more than 600 distros or distributions. A number are described as very light, while others let you operate Linux using another operating system. There are also complete systems that have a wide array of applications.
Tips for First Timers
First timers might want to try out Linux distributions first. You can test by using Knoppix, a Live CD distribution. Linux can boot directly from the CD. You do not even have to install the operating system on your personal computer. Knoppix will also allow you to run and operating different Linux programs, make and save new files within the hard drive. Wubi can also be used to install another famous Linux system called Ubuntu, even if you have a PC based on Windows. Wubi will let you install and run Ubunta, just like a regular application.
First timers can also try Linux Mint. This is supported by many available programs and also is available with mint4win, a tool that allows you to install the operating system without the need to change the configuration of Windows. Ubuntu is ideal for beginners. Other good systems include OpenSUSE or Novell and Fedora or Red Hat. These Linux distribution systems are easy to use for starters. Xandros is categorized as a commercial distribution system, but will allow you to run several applications like Photoshop, Windows applications and Microsoft Office.
Other Uses
Another good Linux distribution system is Puppy Linux Live CD. This can be run on old or slow computers that only have 64MB of RAM. The CD will boot from the CD, a USB drive or a zip drive. AntiX and Xubuntu can also rely on other resources and operate well on older computer models. AntiX can operate on Pentium II specifications. Other good systems include Damn Small Linux and Zenwalk.
At work, you will best operate using Red Hat or Novell Linux. Red Hat is focused more on the server market, compared to the desktop. Xandros is also ideal. Ubuntu can operate on servers and Red Hat is excellent because it keeps your activities and files safe and protected.
Other Available Systems
Netbook users will like a number of Linux distribution systems like Jolicloud, Ubuntu Netbook and Moblin. Using the operating system of your Netbook you can install Ubuntu conveniently. Simply follow the instructions onscreen.
Advanced users generally prefer Arch Linux and Slackware. The Linux distribution system can be installed from nothing. It does not have a GUI and is recommended for experienced users only. Slackware is very fast and one of the first distros available.
Linux has developed much through the years and has made it possible for every user to operate, regardless of their computer experience, computer specifications and existing operating system. The options are vast for any type of user who wants to enjoy the different programs and applications. You can get these systems online or at designated computer and software stores. Learn Linux Without the Commitment - Computers
The Linux operating system has experienced huge growth in the past few years. With excellent stability. flexibility and the free price tag. People are realizing that Linux is a great alternative. Just like Windows, users would have to learn how to use Linux. Linux developers have taken note, and have come up with several ways to allow people to try Linux without getting rid of your Windows installation. Here are a couple of ways you can get a taste of what Linux has to offer.
Live CD
Linux distributions like Ubuntu offer a feature called Live CD. Live CD allows you to boot off of the install CD instead of your hard drive. All you have to do is burn the CD, keep it in your CD drive when booting your computer and press the option to boot from CD. Now each computer is different so consult your PC manufacture for instructions to boot from CD. Once booted you will be able to use almost all of the functionality of the Linux distribution that you have on CD without impacting your Windows installation. There are two drawbacks: You cannot save your settings once you turn off your computer and the operating system tends to run slow because CD drives access data slower than hard drives. If you like what you see you can install to your hard drive from the live CD. Get more information at
Wubi
Wubi is great. What Wubi does is creates a virtual hard drive in one folder stored on your Windows partition. Then Wubi gives you the option to boot into Windows or Linux upon booting by changing your boot record. Installation is easy. Just download the install file. Select the install path and what install of Ubuntu you would like. That's it. Once complete you will have the option to boot into Linux or Windows. If you want to remove Linux just go to add/remove programs and uninstall Wubi. That's it. No mess. There is a small risk of damage to your boot record but I have never seen it. Check Wubi out at /
Virtualbox
Virtualbox is really cool. Virtualbox is a piece of software that you can install in Windows and Linux that will allow you to emulate another operating system while running another. For example, if you use Windows you can install Virtualbox and install Ubuntu then run Ubuntu in a small window or full screen while being able to use everything in Windows. I hope that makes sense. The only drawback Virtualbox has is it runs slow because it has to share system resources with your host operating system. So you won't be playing any games while running Virtualbox. If you want just learn this is a great solution. Once you are done you can close up Virtualbox to free up system resources. For more information go to
That's it! You have three free ways to get your feet wet with Linux. If you like Linux give it an install as your main operating system. There are too many things to explore with Linux to fit in one article. I recommend trying out Ubuntu.

Data Loss in Linux after Doing Apt-get Upgrade - Computers - Data Recovery
The Operating system is the most essential part of a computer system. Operating system vendors periodically release updates to increase their performance and add new functions. In Ubuntu Linux you can use apt-get for complete up-gradation. Apt-get is a powerful command line utility, which is used to communicate with Advanced Packaging Tool (APT) of Ubuntu. It performs installation of new applications packages, update package list index, and upgrade existing software packages. It can even upgrade the core Ubuntu operating system files. Apt-get upgrade checks all software packages in system and then checks those software packages that could be upgraded without uninstalling or affecting anything in the operating system. Then it installs the upgrades. Ultimately you have a fully upgraded Linux system and the software packages that could not upgrade automatically. Being a straightforward command line utility, apt-get has a number of benefits over other application package manag ement toos available for Ubuntu server administrators. Some of the key benefits of this upgrade include: Ease of use as compared to the Simple Terminal Connections (SSH) Compatible with system administration scripts Automated upgrade using the cron (short for chronograph) scheduling toolAlthough, apt-get is an extremely useful tool for Ubuntu up-gradation, but sometimes it may lead to problems. After apt-get upgrade, you may get potential fsck errors on the Linux workstation during startup. The boot process may get halted. Also there is a possibility that you see the system dump in shell with the error:/dev/hda3: Super block last mount time is in the future /dev/hda3: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLYThis behavior of Linux could be the possible result of damage to the file system or errors in the MBR. Due to the same, Linux does not get complete boot information and shows the above error message. Nevertheless the cause of this problem, the ltimate result of this pr oblem would be the loss of your valuable business data. To overcome this problem, you need to perform data recovery in Linux. The data recovery in Linux is best possible with the help of Linux data recovery software. The software is capable of systematically scanning your hard drive, extracting your data leading to absolute Linux recovery. To ensure safe, easy and complete Linux data recovery, a good Linux recovery software is the must have.
